Become a Beach Buddy to help keep Swanage’s beaches beautiful.

Swanage Beach Buddies volunteer group holds regular bi-weekly beach cleans as a way of supporting the town council’s ongoing work to keep the area clean and litter-free.

It’s a great way to get out into the fresh air, do something good and meet a community of like-minded people.

Whether you’re visiting the area and want to join the team for the day, or live here and would like to get involved on a more regular basis, simply get in touch with Swanage Beach Buddies to join a beach clean.

• When: Sunday mornings from 9am and Tuesday evenings from 6pm (unless very bad weather – litter pickers will be informed of cancellation by email)
• Where: Meet at Swanage’s Litter-Free Purbeck beach hut on Shore Road

Please bring gloves and wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather.

The kinds of rubbish collected varies depending on the time of year – the many thousands of visitors in the summer months can generate additional litter, whilst winter gales can deposit marine litter on the shoreline.

By joining a beach clean you’ll be helping remove rubbish such as cigarette butts, bottles, dog waste bags, broken beach toys, plastic cutlery, abandoned BBQs and fishing hooks, line & rope, amongst many other discarded or washed-up items.

The Buddies typically pick up around 20kg of litter at each litter-pick, or 1.5 metric tonnes a year.

In addition to their cleans, Swanage Beach Buddies also give talks at the local schools to raise awareness and help inspire children to do their own beach cleans

Become a Beach Buddy

The group currently has around 30 volunteers and is always looking for more people to join as occasional or regular Buddies.

If you’d be interested in a more hands-on role, there are also opportunities to become a beach clean leader or assistant leader.
